Suicide Squad (Review)

suicide-squad-Harley and Deadshot

At Least the Team is Good

Can a director write a script in six weeks and make a really good blockbuster? Suicide Squad tries to answer that question and it is resounding no! Warner Bros. signed David Ayer, director of Fury and End of the Watch, in September 2014 to write and direct the Suicide Squad. Warner Bros. had the film scheduled to start filming in April of 2015 and to be released in August of 2016. David Ayer had 7 months before filming. He had to research the characters, write a decent script, cast the team (which most of the team December of 2015), and start pre-production in 7 months. Steven Spielberg, John Ford, or any other famous Hollywood Director could have completed this task Warner Bros. and again the studio failed to supersede Marvel’s success.  Suicide Squad turned out to be a mess but is saving grace are the characters and the chemistry that the actors display and really helps bond the characters together.

Superman is dead! The world doesn’t have anybody to protect it. Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) believes that she can coerce a group of supervillains to fight for her and protect the world against other metahumans who want to destroy it.  She manipulates Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnamann) to fall in love with June Moon (Cara Delevinge) to keep her alter-ego, Enchantress, at bay. Enchantress quickly turns on Flagg and Waller. Waller seeking a way to stop Enchantress recruits the supervillains known as:  Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney),  and Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) to fight for her.  The supervillains must work together and prevent Enchantress from destroying the world.

Suicide Squad is a clock with a lot of broken parts but casting, visuals, and action is the parts that work. Visually has a dark setting but the lightening allows humor to be infused within the movie. The action is spectacular. Deadshot can take out an army of baddies by himself by him being so accurate. Harley beats people up with her bat and looks sexy while doing. Captain Boomerang has different kind of boomerangs that help him.  El Diablo and Killer Croc are the muscle with superhuman powers or strength that can rip enemies to shreds or burn them to a crisp. The action sequences are very entertaining because the team works together and each add humor some situations.

Will Smith nails Deadshot. Smith delivers a tormented heart felt performance  and is really the leader of the Suicide Squad. Margot Robbie is fantastic as Harley Quinn. She embodies all of the characteristics of the Harley. Jai Courtney is very entertaining as Captain Boomerang. Boomerang is such a ego maniac, snarky with every character, but also a badass. He really can kick ass in the film.  Jay Hernandez really portrays a tormented Diablo. The audience can tell that Diablo is super powerful but holds back and the movie explains that reasoning quite well. Adewale is really good Killer Croc. He has a physical presence on screen that makes his character very formable.  However, the real star is Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.  Joel Kinnamann is great as Rick Flag but the leader and villain of this movie is Amanda Waller. Davis portrays Waller as ruthless, non-empathetic, and might be a bigger sociopath than the Joker. She will kill anybody to keep a secret.  Suicide Squad has major issues.

The Suicide Squad, despite the character performances, really is unevenly paced with pointless plot.  The pacing is uneven because the movie starts with a bang with the introduction of the team in the prison complex with different musical songs introducing them then switches to Amanda Waller with her song being Sympathy of the Devil.  The song selections were perfect introductions to the characters and their personalities. Waller is the devil so her song is perfect for her. The film switches to Amanda Waller narrating why we need a team metahumans because Superman is dead. Characters actually narrate about other characters during these flashbacks.  The audience spends about twenty minutes getting introduced to these characters and we don’t get to see Waller recruit the team and see their abilities until about 30 minutes in the movie.  The film switches to the Enchantress villain and it keeps switching. The Joker even has a subplot in the film about finding Harley Quinn.  The Joker is another big problem.

The Joker doesn’t belong in the movie. He is a distraction in the storyline, and Jared Leto’s acting is a major distraction.  His Joker is a mixed bag.  His Joker and Harley have a very co-dependent relationship which is nailed perfectly but on the other hand, his mannerisms as the Joker are not creepy and rather predictable. His best scene by himself might be in the night club flashback using Harley as a distraction to kill one of his henchman. However, he is not really memorable because the Harley flashbacks and his storyline take away from the enjoyment of seeing the Suicide Squad as a team together. I walked to the bathroom during a Harley and Joker flashback because the scene was so disinteresting.

Suicide Squad is a bad movie. Everybody is to blame besides the main actors not including Jared Leto as the Joker. The action sequences are good but not memorable. This DC movie has humor in which is a positive. Will Smith, Margo Robbie, and Viola Davis really help make this film entertaining enough to watch.  Warner Bros. Studios does deserve the blame because they expedited the developmental process to complete with Marvel and their marketing department put a emphasis on the Joker. He is in the movie for like 10 to 20 minutes and seriously takes away from the screen time of the team in the film. David Ayer also deserves some blame for adding the Joker in the movie.  However, Suicide Squad deserves a sequel where Deadshot, Harley, and the whole team deserve to come back and face a worthy villain that is entertaining. Suicide Squad gets 2.5 out 5.

Warner Bros. is putting Marvel, Sony, and Fox on alert that they are ready to play ball!

So far, Warner Bros has been heavily criticized on how they handle their DC superhero properties compared to Marvel.  The criticism has been fair because Marvel is almost on its phase 3 with introducing Dr. Strange, Black Panther, the Inhumans, and Captain Marvel. However. Warner Bros announced their DC slate not to long ago and they are continuously stock piling acting talent for their key roles.  Warner will introduce the first Black Superhero first with Cyborg in Batman V. Superman, have a Wonder Woman movie before Marvel’s Captain Marvel movie, and have a villain team up movie before Sony’s Sinister Six movie.  Warner Bros might be fashionable late to the party but they are introducing their characters first. Yesterday, Warner Bros and DC announced the cast for Suicide Squad.

Suicide Squad is a team of villains under the command of Amanda Waller who take out bad guys or take on dangerous missions for the government in order to get a reduced sentences or full pardons. Warner Bros. has said this movie will be like the Dirty Dozen. They have kind of officially announced that Deadshot will be the leader of the team. David Ayers, director of Fury, wrote the screenplay and will direct the film.   Who are the characters that we will see in this movie?

Smith will play Dead Shot

Smith will play Deadshot

Deadshot is known as Deadshot because he is a master marksmen that never misses. He is an assassin for hire who has a sense of honor. He will not kill anybody but his target usually. However, if a cop or some other hero were to stand in between his target and his line of sight. Deadshot can manipulate a trajectory of a bullet to hit his target. He kills to pay for his daughter’s medical bills. Will Smith needs this role because he has been mostly crap since he did Hancock. Smith will bring a cold likeable charm to his master marksmen.

Tom Hardy will play Rick Flagg

Tom Hardy will play Rick Flagg

Rick Flagg is not a supervillain.  He is a master tactician and strategist, expert on explosives, and very good marksmen. I believe this version of the Rick Flagg will be a leader of the team but will the go to guy to get new weapons or surveillance equipment. He will help the team navigate on their mission. He is the most vulnerable member of the team.  Flagg still can kick ass in hand to hand combat when he needs to.  Hardy is one of the best actors in Hollywood right now. He will make Rick Flagg be important because of his charismatic.

Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang

Jai Courtney will play Captain Boomerang

Digger Harkness is the man who is known as Captain Boomerang. He is Australian but his specialty are his boomerangs which are his weapons.  His Boomerang are a lot like the Batarangs which have special capabilities. They are can penetrate the Batsuit and or follow the Flash at high speeds. Courtney is a upcoming action star who is from Australia. He will be Kyle Reese in Terminator Genesis and that movie will be coming out next summer.

Cara Delevinge as the Enchantress

Cara Delevinge will play the Enchantress

Enchantress is a powerful sorceress. She appears to possess the ability to manipulate magical energy for any number of effects, from healing to teleportation, and can directly affect any non-living objects with her magic. She can also walk through walls. She is a member of the Suicide Squad for keeping her evil side in check.  Personality, I applaud DC and Warner Bros. for bringing in their magic universe into their film universe already. Wonder Woman fights magical enemies as does Dr. Fate, Zatanna, or even Constantine. Delevinge doesn’t have  a big acting resume so she is an unknown.

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. As the Joker likes to say Harley Harley Harley multiple times

Margot Robbie will play Harley Quinn. As the Joker likes to say Harley Harley Harley multiple times

Margot Robbie is the second big fish in this movie. Will Smith is a big movie star and playing most likely the leader of the team but Robbie is playing almost the fan favorite. Harley Quinn is a character transcends any other character in this movie besides one other character. She is the Joker’s girlfriend or wife depending on what version of the comic you are reading. She has a likeable charm, is a psychopath, and has no problems in being seductive to stab a person in a back.   Robbie has gained frame from her role in Wolf of Wall Street. I didn’t like the movie so I can tell if she is going to be a good Harley Quinn. I do believe the fact she looks like Harley Quinn is one of the reasons why Robbie was cast. The Hollywood casting brass will tell you that Robbie has talent so I am not going on a fanboy about how she is awful. I mean she is no Gal Gadot after all.

Jared Leto will be the Joker or Mister J. as Harley calls him. She even calls him Pudding.

Jared Leto will be the Joker or Mister J. as Harley calls him. She even calls him Pudding.

The Joker is the big fish of his movie. I don’t care if Lex Luthor might be in it or rumor Oprah is being considered for Amanda Waller. Waller is the commander of the Suicide Squad. The Joker is the household name. He is so beloved by many that they can’t screw him up. I do believe the Joker will be the bad guy. They will go get him because Lex Luthor wants to use him to kill Batman. The announcement gives a sense how Batman V. Superman will end. The two heroes will become friends and will decide to work together but Lex Luthor’s hatred of Superman will cause to find another villain who can take down Batman. There’s the key, The Joker is really super villain who ultimately break the will of Batman. It will be curious to see how the other villains will fit in or like this plan.  I’m Leto’s Joker will be more like Mark Hamil’s take from the Batman Arkham Games.

Overall, I like the cast annoucement of the Suicide Squad. I think the esemble cast will deliver and the movie comes out August 5th, 2016.

Gotham (series premiere review)

Gotham Created by Bruno Heller

It’s all about the Batman Villains

Gotham City is one of the most iconic fictional cities in pop culture. The world knows about  exceptionally insane characters that live and torment Gotham City such as: Batman, The Joker, Two Face, The Riddler, and some of the other major Batman villains.  However, this show has no Batman as the hero but Detective James Gordon as its hero.  Gotham is set to explore the origins of Bruce Wayne’s training to become Batman; James Gordon rising though the ranks to become Police Commissioner; and infamous Joker, Riddler, and Poison Ivy becoming those homicidal lunatic super villains that we all know and love.

James Gordon (Ben Mackenzie) is the new boy in the Gotham Police Department. He’s a war hero and very honorable. He is partnered with the slimy cowardly Detective Harvey Bullock (Donald Logue).  The two immediately have conflicts on how to enforce the law. However, they are forced to investigate Bruce Wayne’s parents murder.   Gordon makes a promise to Alfred (Sean Pertwee) and Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) that he will find the murderer that killed Wayne s.  Along the way, the detectives go to Fish Mooney (Jada Pickett Smith) for information about the murder and start the powder keg for her to become Gotham’s leader of organize crime.

Honestly, the best part of the show were the visuals. Gotham is not a science fiction  show but Gotham had dark, misty, and corrupt feel to make a good crime show.  The setting combined Batman Begins with Tim Burton’s Batman to make the city look spectacular.  The other best part of the show was not James Gordon or Harvey Bullock but they were spectacular characters too. Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) stole the show. He was the most charismatic character in the premiere and such a wonderful slimy little bastard.  Robin Lord Taylor had so much cunning, anger, and likeable in his performance of Cobblepot. He will become the Penguin and put a bullet through the head of Fish Mooney by season’s end (a prediction that I have).  Ben Mackenzie, Donald Logue, and Robin Lord Taylor did brilliant jobs on portraying their comic book characters.

For the negatives, the episode had really boring moments and felt flat.  The two big issues were the Fish Mooney character and Catwoman. The episode overall was entertaining but Fish Mooney didn’t feel threatening such as Mr. Freeze would be. Jada Pickett Smith had no energy in her performance and her character felt lackluster. She was one dimensional; however, there are chances for her to grow into homicidal maniac in future episodes. The really WTF moment is Catwoman. She serves no purpose in the first episode. She would climb on buildings and watch things. Can you say boring? The show runners could have introduced her more brilliantly and charismatically but they put her in to do nothing.  It was pathetic use of the iconic Catwoman; however, she will be the focus on next week’s episode.

Overall, Gotham was good but it wasn’t Batman Begins or Batman brilliant. James Gordon, Harvey Bullock, and Oswald Cobblepot were compelling characters. They made the episode worth watching combined with that dark visual tone of the show.  Catwoman was wasted and pathetically introduced as a character.  There is a big Joker reference (maybe a particular scene) in the episode. This show will develop its own version of the Joker and big props to the creators for taking on that beloved homicidal clown. Jada Pickett Smith was uninspiring but there are chances for her to develop.  Gotham gets a 3.5/5.
