Creed Trailer (thoughts)

Michael B. Jordan looks fantastic and sounds cocky as Apollo Creed did!

The Rocky Franchise is one of the most beloved franchises in film history. Creed is the spin-off of the franchise with Michael B. Jordan staring as Apollo Creed’s son.  If you are not familiar with the Rocky Franchise…let me enlighten you.

Rocky tells of a underdog boxer who by some miracle gets picked out of a list of local boxers to fight the heavyweight champ, Apollo Creed. Rocky Balboa, nicknamed the Italian Stallion in the ring, is a loan shark enforcer by day and fighter by night.  Rocky never living up to his potential finally gets his mentor Mickey Goldmill to train him for the fight against Apollo. Rocky meets and falls in love with Adrian, a girl who works at the local pet shop. During the fight, Rocky knocks Apollo down to the mat and Apollo realizes that Rocky wants to win. The two men fight and Apollo Creed wins the fight in a judges decision.  Rocky is recognized a local legend and hero in Philadelphia and viewed as the guy who nearly had his dream come true to inspire millions.  The first Rocky stared Sylvester Stallone as Rocky, Carl Weathers as Apollo Creed, Burgess Meredith as Mickey, and Talia Shire as Adrian. It won Best Picture and Best Director at the 49th academy awards while Sylvester Stallone, Burgess Meredith, Talia Shire, and Burt Young who played Paulie, Adrian’s brother, were nominated for their respective acting categories.

Rocky II, Rocky retires from the professional boxing life to start a life with Adrian. He has trouble because Rocky’s English and lack of education really gives him no opportunities in life. Apollo Creed is still pissed off at the fight ended in a judge’s decision. The constant hate mail causes Apollo to publicly challenge Rocky to the dismay of Apollo’s trainer and manager, Duke. Rocky still declines until Adrian gives him the ok to fight again. Mickey and Rocky change his fighting style to make Rocky a lethal fighter with his right hand.  Rocky by nature is a leftie. Rocky and Apollo square in the ring with Rocky defeating Apollo. Rocky becomes World Heavyweight Champion.

Rocky III, Rocky becomes a national and worldwide figure. He has everything: money, popularity, and keeps successfully defending his title. Philadelphia commemorates Rocky with a statue and the event is interrupted by Clubber Lang played Mr. T.  Lang challenges Rocky publicly which Rocky accepts. Before the fight, Mickey gets pushed into the wall and has a heart attack and dies. Rocky heart broken loses the fight against Lang.  Apollo shows up in Mickey’s gym and reminds him that Rocky once had desire. Apollo and Rocky train together under Apollo’s trainer tutelage, Duke, with the theme song (Eye of the Tiger sung by Savior) playing in the background of the training montage.  Rocky defeats Clubber Lang and becomes World Champion again. Rocky and Apollo have a private fight because the two men are fights but we never get to see who won.

Rocky IV,  Rocky is famous and a worldwide figure again. Apollo Creed wants to fight again. He sees a Russian amateur boxer, Ivan Drago played by Dolph Lundgren, has come to the United States to box. Apollo challenges the Russian to a fight. He thinks the fight is going to be a show and not real physical fight. Apollo quickly realizes that Ivan is not playing. His ignorance to throw in the towel costs Apollo his life. Rocky realizing it is his fault that his best friend died decides to challenge Drago. Rocky forfeits the championship to fight Drago in Moscow. Rocky is forced to train in Serbia and Drago gets to train with the State of the Art equipment. On Christmas Day, the two men fight with the Moscow booing Rocky. Rocky eventually wins the crowd over along with the Russian Prime Minister who stand up and applauds Rocky after he won.  Rocky gives an inspirational speech and the movie ends with America and Russia need to stop fighting the Cold War.

Rocky V is complete dogshit. It’s considered one of the worst movies ever. Rocky retires loses everything except for his son who owns Mickey’s gym. Rocky finds a protégé, Tommy Gunn.  Rocky sends time with him more than his own son. Gunn betrays Rocky in order to sign a big deal with a promoter. Rocky and Gunn square off in a street fight while Rocky knocks the shit out of the Gunn.

Rocky VI, Rocky opens up a restaurant called Adrian’s to honor his beloved wife who died of ovarian cancer. He struggles with everyday life without Adrian. Rocky and his son, Robert, rarely talk.  ESPN has simulation between old fighters and new ones. Rocky defeats Mason “The Line” Dixon in the simulation fight. Dixon is rather irritated and wants to prove himself. Rocky applies for a boxing license and gets one. He starts to fight in local charity event but is convinced to fight Dixon for exhibition.  Dixon and Rocky fight and Dixon wins by split decision. Dixon is no longer looked upon as being weak but being a strong champion. Rocky gains respect from the world and his son.

Creed is the spinoff of the Rocky franchise. Sylvester Stallone is returning as Rocky to help train Apollo Creed’s son played by Michael B. Jordan. The story will focus on Apollo’s son and his struggles in life. The two actors look like they have amazing chemistry together from the trailer. I think the movie could get Oscar Buzz.  The director of the movie is Ryan Coogler. He directed a film called Fruitvale Station which is on Netflix. The film also starred Michael B. Jordan.  Creed will be released on Thanksgiving or November 25th.
