10 Anticipated Films for 2015

top ten

My number 1 isn’t surprising but my list might be!

Trailers can be magical.  They can excite people to go, get interested, or go oh hell no to a movie.  I love trailers because last year two trailer which made me super giddy were the new Amazing Spider-man 2 and Godzilla trailer. God, those two movies should have just stuck to their trailer because they were pretty disappointing in my opinion.  This list will be comprised of my top 10 anticipated films in 2015.

10. St. James Place

Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg together, yes sign me up! St. James Place is based on James Donovan’s task of getting Francis Powers out of a Soviet prison when Power’s U-2 spy plane crashed in Russia.  The movie is a historical drama, and I love historical dramas.  More importantly, Tom Hank is leading actor with Steven Spielberg is directing.  They have worked together before on multiple projects as has the Cohen Brothers.  Personality, the movie’s star, director, and writers with the plot has my attention.

Child 44 Directed by Daniel Espinosa Starring: Tom Hardy Gary Oldman

9. Child 44

Child 44 is based on a book written by Tom Rob Smith.  The synopsis is a disgraced MGB agent is dispatched to investigate a series of child murders — a case that begins to connect with the very top of party leadership. Tom Hardy will play the disgraced MGB agent while Gary Oldman will probably play the villain.  I love both actors because both of them bring great charisma to the screen. Gary Oldman is a great supporting actor and probably play a great villain.  Tom Hardy is amazing as actor. He is probably one of the best actors in Hollywood.  This movie will have mass appeal if marketed correctly because of the narrative is a spy crime drama.  Child 44 will be released on April 17, 2015.

8. Spectre (Bond 24)

I love James Bond so much.  The only reason this movie isn’t in my top 5 because they only the announced the cast and there is no trailer yet.  The premise is a cryptic message from an unlikely source sets James Bond navigating the layers of a sinister organization known as SPECTRE. As M continues fighting political pressures that threaten the future of MI6, Bond draws closer to uncovering a hidden truth that threatens to destroy everything he has fought to protect.  There is no footage like the other movies on my list. Sony is a mess but the cast and the premise will make me go see this opening night.  I mean who doesn’t love James Bond!

Tom Cruise will play Ethan Hunt again7. Mission Impossible 5

What crazy stunt will Tom Cruise do this time! Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt always does crazy stunts.  He has climbed up buildings, had a fight on top of a high speed train, and plays a damn good confident spy.  Mission Impossible 4 was awesome. It is on Netflix if you want to watch it.  I suggest you do. The Mission Impossible series has progressively gotten better with each film.  This film will be released on Christmas day of next year.  The plot is still unknown but look for a trailer in the spring.

It's the Terminator!

It’s the Terminator!

6.  Terminator Genisys

I love this trailer! It capture my attention and excitement for this film.  I’m glad Arnold is back as an older terminator. I love the plot that the terminator will go back in to multiple time periods.  It looks like they are going to reboot the franchise to make more films. I love the first two Terminator films because they capture the imagination.  The cast is pretty good and the fact there is a T-1000 that Kyle Reese has to fight then I am all for that.  Terminator Genisys will be released on July 1st, 2015.

Iron Man Hawkeye Hulk Thor Captain America Black Widow Vision

5. Avengers: Age of Ultron

I love the first Avengers and adore the actors who play the Avengers.  Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, Black Widow and now Vision that is a superhero team that I am so excited for. The reason this isn’t number 1 because I kind of know what to except from this film.  The four other movies on my list are unknowns and are the first movie in a possibly new franchise.  They are also underdogs compared to this film. James Spader as the voice of Ultron…hell yes. The trailer was awesome too.  Joss Whedon is back at the helm as director.

Twenty-two years after the events of Jurassic Park, Isla Nublar, off of Central America's Pacific coast, now features a fully functioning dinosaur theme park, Jurassic World, as originally envisioned by John Hammond. This new park is owned by the Masrani Global Corporation. Owen (Chris Pratt), a member of the park's on-site staff, conducts behavioral research on the Velociraptors. At the corporation's request, the park's geneticists create a genetically-modified hybrid dinosaur to boost visitor attendance, but it soon runs wild on the island

4. Jurassic World

Jurassic Park 4 has been in development hell for ages. Finally Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly created a script that gave Universal Studios confidence to green light this movie.  The trailer for this film went viral and spread like wildfire.  I love the first Jurassic Park and thought this trailer had so many similarities to the first Jurassic Park trailer.  I think Chris Pratt can do no wrong at the moment and it feels he will be the Malcolm, Jeff Goldbum’s character in the first movie,  in this film.  The scene with the shark and the scary looking sea dinosaur gave me chills.  I’m really looking forward to this film.

Ant-man Directed by Peyton Reed Starring: Michael Douglas as Hank Pym Paul Rudd as Scott Lang

Paul Rudd as Scott Lang

3. Ant-man

The creation of this movie has faced a lot of scrutiny by the previous director, Edgar Wright, leaving and with hiring of a new screenwriter and director 2 months before filming. However, the positive spin on this film are the two main actors.  Michael Douglas is in a superhero movie! This man only really goes for the serious roles now and has a lot of star power to his name. Paul Rudd is starring as the comedy bad boy hero, Scott Lang.  I love Ant-man as a character. I love the scientist that Hank Pym is and the con artist who becomes a hero in Scott Lang’s case.  Pym teaches Lang how to use the Ant-man suit to take back his company. I hope this means the two characters will appear in the third Avengers movie. (I added the video from the cast and director at San Diego Comic Con about Ant-man).

Miles Teller-Mr. Fantastic Kate Mara-Sue Storm Michael B. Jordon- Johnny Storm Jamie Bell-Ben Grimm

2. Fantastic Four

I love the Fantastic Four comic. They’re one of my favorite superhero teams.  Mr. Fantastic is the smart intelligent scientist who stretch any part of his body.  Mrs. Fantastic has the ability to turn invisible or put up force fields. The Human Torch yells “Flame On!” He becomes a humanoid ball of fire and has the ability to fly. The Thing is Ben Grimm who was turned into a rock monster but has a heart of gold. He yells out “It’s Clobbering Time.” The Fantastic Four also space travel and celebrities known to the media. The writer of X-Men: Days of Future Past wrote the screenplay for this film. It should bolster the faith that the fans have in this movie. The cast is my number one reason why the movie excites me so much. Miles Teller could be nominated for an Oscar this year for his role in Whiplash and he plays Mr. Fantastic. Michael B. Jordon is one of the best young actors in Hollywood with a lot of charisma. I am definitely going to see the Fantastic Four on August 7th, 2015.

1.  Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Yes, it is true! We will have a new Star Wars movie next year with the original cast coming back.  I both love Star Trek and Star Wars.  JJ Abrams is directing Episode VII, and from the trailer it looks like he has got the franchise back on track.  This Star Wars movie will feature a younger cast which will have their own saga.  I am not going to go to much more into detail, but I do know that the next trailer will come out around May before Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Top 10 Favorite Movies of the Year 2014

What is your favorite movie? Most people ask you that question on a date or in general as a way to get to know someone.  The responses always vary because it is a matter of opinion.  I have a list of my favorite movies of all time which include many classic and newer films. Although, I have never sat down and made a list of my 100 favorite movies because it is strains my mind too much. I can decide on my top ten favorite movies of the 2014.  Favorite doesn’t mean that my movies are some of the best movies of the year but they could be.

Honorable mentions:

  • Birdman
  • Lego Movie
  • Snow Piercer
  • John Wick
  • Noah
  • 22 Jump Street
  • Neighbors
  • The Fault in Our Stars
  • The Drop
  • Peabody and Sherman (surprising I know but darn good movie).

10. Grand Budapest Hotel

I love this cast. Grand Budapest Hotel’s cast and their interaction with each other made me see this film twice in the theater.  I’m not a Wes Anderson fan but this film was super amazing. My mom and I have watched the blueray a few times since we got it. The movie itself made me laugh all of the way through it.  I still quote lines from this film and replay scenes in my head. Grand Budapest Hotel is a delightful comedy and Ralph Fiennes is one of the reasons why.

9. Locke

Tom Hardy is brilliant and one of my favorite actors in Hollywood.  Tom Hardy also starred in The Drop which is probably why it made my honorable mentions list.  Locke is only 90 minutes long but the runtime tells a creative emotionally story which is might be why I adore this film so much. It is also a British film, and I have a soft spot for British entertainment. Tom Hardy really gave a performance of a lifetime because he is a one man trick and pony show in the film. Steven Knight wrote and directed a great indie flick that few people have seen but when they watch it. They will fall for Tom Hardy as an actor as much as I have.  I will see Mad Max: Fury Road in May because Tom Hardy does star in it. I don’t think it will get my money opening weekend though.

Jake Gyllenhaal as Lou Riz Ahmed as Rick Nightcrawler directed and written by Dan Gilroy

Jake Gyllenhaal as Lou

Nightcrawler directed and written by Dan Gilroy

8. Nightcrawler

I loved Nightcrawler because of the underlying theme.  I also have a preference for sociopathic film characters and Jake Gyllenhaal portrays one.  Nightcrawler’s theme is about greed and selfishness. Lou, Gyllenhaal, is a selfish greedy free lance reporter.  He will sabotage a rival reporter, and put his employee, Rick, in jeopardy to become number 1 in the game. He also blackmails his boss to sleep with him.  Gyllenhaal gave the best acting performance in an American film of this year.  The movie also stars Bill Paxton and Rene Russo. They really make this film great and the film is two hours of pure entertainment and suspense with a lot of jaw dropping moments.

Chef starting Jon Favreau

Chef starting Jon Favreau

7. Chef

Chef is one of those films that really hit a note with me. I love to cook but watching Jon Favreau prepare food was awesome. I left the theater hungry and wanting to try one Favreau’s Cabanos from Chef.  Chef is about Chef Carl Casper fall from a prestigious LA chef to a unemployable chef after his tirade with nation wide prestigious food critic at the place of his employment. The film is more importantly about family and having to struggle between your career and your kids. The cast of Chef is spectacular.  The actors all have great chemistry together on screen and make this film a wonderful comedy. I would highly recommend this movie to anybody.  The latina music is super amazing and could see people grooving to it in the their seats. I enjoyed this film so much that I made my grandmother to go the theater with me to see it.

Caesar, Koba, and Maurice on horses

Caesar, Koba, and Maurice on horses

6. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Apes on Horses!!! Dawn of the Planet of the Apes might be better than the first Planet of the Apes.  The plot has so many different directions that makes you think that you know what will happen next but then a character changes that outlook. Andy Serkis, Toby Kebbell, and Karin Konoval play the three most important apes. Serkis is the Caesar, the leader while Kebbell plays Koba and Konoval plays Maurice Caeser’s Lieutenants. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is very realistic film which has beautiful visuals of a post apocalyptic world. Serkis and the other actors playing Apes had motion capture suits on, and the special effects crew made them look like real humanoid apes. I think this is one of the years best films and possibly one of the best blockbuster in a long time. The third one comes out in July 2016 so they will be filming the movie this year.

Captain America 2: the Winter Solider by Marvel Director by Joe and Anthony Russo Starting Chris Evans

Captain America 2: the Winter Soldier by Marvel
Director by Joe and Anthony Russo
Starting Chris Evans

5. Captain America 2: the Winter Soldier

Captain America 2 is pure entertainment that has comedy fused in the story from the moment from the first scene. Sam Wilson, Anthony Mackie,  is running around the National Memorial, and Steve Rodgers keeps passing him saying “On your left.”  The moment immediately forms a friendship between Rodgers and Wilson that is why they team up later in the film. Chris Evans is so great as Captain America. He can inspire you to feel patriotic and just a lot like Christopher Reeves as Superman.  I love Captain America more because of Chris Evans.  Captain America 2 is one of the best action movies of the year, and one of the best movies of the year overall. This movie makes you feel like you are watching a Jason Bourne movie with Captain America in it.  Captain America will appear in Avengers: Age of Ultron in May then Captain America: Civil War.  He will fight Iron Man’s ideas and probably Iron Man himself in Civil War in May 2016.

The poster for X-Men Days of Future Past

4.  X-Men Days of Future Past

X-men Days of Future Past corrected the mistakes of Brett Ratner and the First Wolverine movie.  The plot is simple.  Wolverine, Hugh Jackman, travels back in time to prevent Mystique, Jennifer Lawrence, from assassinating Bolivar Trask, Peter Dinkage.  The government creates the Sentinel program because she killed Trask and use her DNA to make the ultimate Sentinel. The Sentinel are super intelligent robots that hunt mutants. The X-Men franchise hit a homer with this movie. It has comedy, amazing action sequences, and it is pure entertainment. The variety of mutants are great and it is nice to see each of them use their own powers.  Simon Kinberg wrote the script which has made the internet fan boys semi-excited for the new Fantastic Four movie coming out in August (he wrote the script).  Bryan Singer returned to the X-Men franchise and got the direction of the franchise back on track.  The film will have a sequel X-Men: Apocalypse which will start filming in April. Fox Studios are releasing a Gambit movie and Deadpool movie which will be part of the X-Men universe.  Ugh, I can’t wait for 2016. I don’t have this movie yet.  Singer cut Rogue from the film and I want Rogue in this movie.

3. Guardians of the Galaxy

This movie is pure fun.  It is a great science fiction movie with great witty dialogue and pop culture references.  This little known comic book property has shocked the world by its success with a worldwide audience and financially was a home run.  The cast is great.  The interaction between characters is spectacular.  This is Marvel’s most entertaining film.  I reply it in my head all of the time.  Guardians will come back to the big screen in May 2017. Again, I can’t wait to see what James Gunn comes up with for the sequel. I have seen it multiple times and still want to dance like Star Lord or along with him.

Edge of Tomorrow directed by Doug Liman Starts Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt

Edge of Tomorrow directed by Doug Liman

2. Edge of Tomorrow

Edge of Tomorrow looked so horrible from the trailers, and thanks to bad marketing by Warner Bros, this movie wasn’t a success at the box office domestically. However, the film was a success with its viewing audience. Many people like me just completely were stunned by the movie. Tom Cruise is at his best in Edge of Tomorrow.  He was played the likeable action hero in this movie and nailed the role. Personally, Tom Cruise like Tom Hardy is a guy that I will go see any movie that he is in.  Emily Blunt played the female protagonist,  and she was magnificent.  She and Cruise had such great chemistry on the screen. Edge of Tomorrow is edited in a way where every repeat scene is different.  Cruise plays Major William Cage that is has the ability to reset the day after killing an alien.  Bill Paxton’s character is really outstanding and probably the funniest character in the film. Edge of Tomorrow is a science fiction groundhog day but it is one of the best action movies of the year.

1. Gone Girl

Gone Girl is my favorite film of the year. I love this movie and sold on the plot from the first trailer. Gone Girl is really three hours of pure suspenseful entertainment.  I have seen this film about three times in the theater.  I was still wowed by the suspense and mystery every moment of the film.  Ben Affleck kills it in the movie but it is Rosemund Pike who steals the show. Tyler Perry also a giant scene stealer. Neil Patrick Harris’s final moment in the film will leave you speechless.  Gone Girl had the same tone and setting throughout the whole entire movie.  I will get this DVD and watch several times after I get it.  This might be the best mystery drama produced by Fox in a long time.  David Fincher will probably get an Oscar nomination, and Gillian Flynn will get the best adapted screenplay award.  I will end this list on this final tidbit about Gone Girl.  The movie will make you look twice or think twice about getting married or even dating. I think this why I like it so much.  It makes you question what it means to be in a relationship.

My Top Ten BEST Movies of the Year

Best Movies of the Year

I have not seen every movie that has come out this year or even seen the potential Oscar movies like FoxCatcher, Whiplash, or a few others. This list will the best films of the year in opinion that I have seen; however, doesn’t mean they’re my favorite films of this year.  My judgment of these will be based on my experience watching them in a theater and judging all aspects of the film.

Honorable mentions:

  • Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
  • Snow Piercer
  • Edge of Tomorrow

  • X-Men Days of the Future Past

10. The Babadook

The Babadook is one of the best horror movies to terrify audiences since Poltergeist.  I don’t like horror movies because I ignore questions about going to see in the theater. The story follows a recently widowed single mother and her son’s aggressively disruptive behavior.  He has dreams a of a creature called the Babadook, and their home life suddenly becomes strange with a paranormal activity constantly. For example, The Babadook, the creature, has a creepy voice that saids “The Babadoook” and it is freaky as hell to be riding in a backseat of the car while that voice is constantly talking to you. The film has a underlying theme of the difficulties of being a single mother. The Babadook is shot beautifully, and the setting is very dark and grim.   The film was directed by Jennifer Kent who also wrote the screenplay. The Babadook is certainly the marquee horror film of a new generation.

9. The Grand Budapest Hotel

The Grand Budapest Hotel stars Ralph Fiennes and an ensemble cast that includes: Adrien Brody, Jeff Goldblum, William Defoe, and several other famous actors. The movie follows Gustave H who is the concierge at the Grand Budapest Hotel. He gets framed for a murder and his loyal lobby boy, Zero Moustafa, helps him prove his innocence. The film is a dark comedy and the cinematography makes the prison outbreak scenes hilarious. The dialogue is witty and clever. The tone and pacing of the film builds tension but Ralph Fiennes gives a hell of a comedic performance. The film has earned several nominations from the Critics Broadcast Society, Golden Globes, and the Screen Actors guild.

8. Guardians of the Galaxy

Originally Snow Piercer was going to make the list; however, I couldn’t let Guardians be left of my list.  Guardians is the second best marvel movie ever made, and one of the most entertaining movies of the year. Guardians is probably one of the best box office successes of the decade. This little known comic book property has made over 770 million worldwide, spawn the creation of a new animated TV show on Disney XD’s channel which will premiere this spring, and number 1 soundtrack.  Guardians is about the a rag team of outlaws who come together to sell a orb after they stole from a tyrant named Ronan the Accuser. The movie is completely entertaining, and is filled with pop culture references like Kevin Bacon, Footloose, John Stamos, and other references. James Gunn directed the film and is currently writing the sequel.  Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper star or provide the voices of the Guardians. Groot and Rocket, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper, do steal most of the scenes of the movie.  This is probably Marvel’s biggest hit so far. (although not financially)

Birdman is the inner voice of Reagan Thomson

Birdman is the inner voice of Reagan Thomson

7. Birdman

First time I saw Birdman and thought it was ok. However, I keep thinking about scenes about this movie; therefore, it means that I do really think it is one of the best movies of the year and one of my favorites. Birdman arguably has the best acting, cinematography, and the best dark comedy of the year. The film is super funny but it drives the point that some actors get pegged for one role for their entire life. Michael Keaton will always be recognized as Batman and some people say he is their Batman.  Keaton plays an actor Reagan Thomson is starring in his own play that he wrote and directs. No major critic takes him seriously and neither do the other actors that work with on the play. Birdman is shot to make it look like the film is one continuous take. Alejandro González Iñárritu wrote and directed the film. Emma Stone and Edward Norton are part of the supporting cast.

Locke

6. Locke

Locke is Tom Hardy at his best. He plays Ivan Locke an architect that made a mistake several months ago. He had an one night affair with a woman who is giving birth to their child. Ivan has the biggest job tomorrow but decides to travel to London from Birmingham to present at the birth of his child. The film is set in a car, and Hardy gives a hell of an acting performance.  Locke was written and directed by Steven Knight. Steven Knight is currently writing World War Z II. Tom Hardy is Tom Hardy that nails any role which stars in. He is going to star in Mad Max: Fury Road and playing Elton John in Rocket Man. Hardy is one of the best actors in Hollywood. His performance of Locke is very compelling. He won the LA Critics best acting award for his performance as Locke. Hardy nails every emotion that Ivan goes with midlife crisis and it makes the film super suspenseful and compelling. Hardy should be nominated for a best actor but that category is filled with good actors this year.

Chef starting Jon Favreau

Chef starting Jon Favreau

5. Chef

Chef stars Jon Favreau who plays Chef Carl Casper. Chef Casper is a prominent chef at LA restaurant who is terminated because of a outburst with a nationwide film food critic. Casper struggles to find himself but with the help of his ex wife, son, and best friend. Casper reinvents himself by starting a food truck that makes Cubanos. Chef is a R comedy but very hilarious. It was my favorite film of the year until Edge of Tomorrow came out.  This movie is a heartfelt indie flick that will make you go hungry while watching it.  Jon Favreau wrote one of the best screenplays of the year and directed a wonderful entertaining film.

Jake Gyllenhaal as Lou being unethical.

Jake Gyllenhaal as Lou being unethical.

4. Nightcrawler

Jake Gyllenhaal gave the best acting performance of the year.  He played an unethical bastard named Lou in Nightcrawler. He will do anything for a story and that means anything.  The beauty of Nightcrawler is that show how much the local and national press has changed over time. The Slogan “if it bleeds then it leads” is pretty much the major theme in this movie.  Nightcrawler examines the press and shows how despicable they have become. Dan Gilroy wrote and directed the film.  Gyllenhaal himself lost weight to play the role of Lou and is probably a lock to get an Oscar for the role. (Michael Keaton for Birdman is the favorite right now).

Captain America 2: the Winter Solider by Marvel Director by Joe and Anthony Russo Starting Chris Evans

Captain America 2: the Winter Soldier by Marvel
Director by Joe and Anthony Russo

3. Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier

Captain America 2 is the best Marvel movie ever and arguably the second best comic book movie since the Dark Knight is number 1.  Steve Rodgers, Captain America, (Chris Evans) is working for SHIELD and doing their dirty work.  Rodgers has Nick Fury, Samuel L. Jackson, show up at his apartment and sees the Director of Shield get assassinated.  Rodgers becomes an outlaw and uncovers that his longtime foe has taken over SHIELD. The movie has is filled with great action, humor, and is a great spy story. It is a superhero movie that a has Jason Bourne plot. The movie also leaves you to question the authority and power of national spy organizations like the CIA and the NSA.  Honestly, the realistic plot is one of the reasons why this movie hit a homer with a worldwide audience.

2. Gone Girl

Oh Gone Girl! This film has everything and arguably the best movie of the year when it came out.  It is an Oscar favorite. Gone Girl is about Nick Dunne who is having an affair with one of his students but comes home to find his wife missing. He contacts the authorities and their investigation points to Nick Dunne killing his wife, Amy. Nick, Ben Affleck, is follows his wife’s treasure hunt for their 5th year anniversary and discovers that Amy, Rosamund Pike, has framed him for her murder.  The movie is two and half hours of pure suspension with plot twists galore. Gillan Flynn wrote the screenplay and will win an Oscar for adapted screenplay for it. She is the author of the best selling book Gone Girl. David Fincher could be a lock for Best Director and Rosamund Pike for best actress.  Trent Renzor might win an Oscar again for best score. Gone Girl will make you question marriage or even being in a relationship. Ben Affleck also delivers a performance that is his best ever, and also proving that he can be Batman.

Calvary Directed by John Michael McDonagh Starring: Brendan Gleeson as Father James

Calvary
Directed and written by John Michael McDonagh
Starring:
Brendan Gleeson as Father James

1. Calvary

Calvary is an independent British film that no one has seen in America except the big movie markets or the crew from AMC Movie Talk.  I decided to go see Calvary on the Redskin’s bye week because of Breedan Gleeson.  Breedan Gleeson is known for as Mad Eye Moody from Harry Potter to most of the American viewing public.  Calvary deals with the catholic child molestation issue. Gleeson is one of my favorite actors and his son, Domhnall Gleeson, is one of the best young actors in Hollywood.  Calvary is Gleeson’s film and his performance was the best dramatic performance that I have seen all year in a foreign film.

Father James, Gleeson, is sitting in his confessional when one of his weekly members of his congregation tells him that he is planning to kill him in seven days.  The member was a victim of child abuse from a catholic priest who is dead. The member tells him that his reasoning to kill Father James is shock the world and cause the Catholic Church finally do something about the on going child molestation within the Catholic Church.  Father James also has to deal with his daughter who tried to commit suicide. He also is the leader of the town that he lives in. James deals with many problems that the town’s people have.

Calvary emphasizes the importance of Catholic or other religious priests in the small town life. The film is pretty blunt that not all Catholic Priests are child molesters but are really down to earth good hearted people.  The sexual abuse victim and their struggles helps the viewer what these people go through for their entire life. James is seen as the leader and many townspeople turn to him for guidance.  John Michael McDonagh directed a suspenseful and moving story that would be a Oscar buzz film if more people got to see it. Calvary is the best film of the year to me.

It might be time for a change!

The Doctor Who Christmas Specials are particularly fun, exciting, and sometimes introduces a new doctor or is a regeneration episode. The new episode  “Last Christmas” where the Doctor meets Santa Clause should be extremely fun, right?  The complete opposite happens. The newest episode of Doctor Who is mind bending boring. The episode is not only boring and has a shift of tones throughout the plot but a complete rip off of 1979’s Alien.  Honestly, the BCC has to address the main problem of Doctor Who which is Steven Moffat because his direction of the show will alienate fans with the Doctor being such an ass along his companion.

The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and his bipolar companion Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) heading to the North Pole. The Doctor and Clara find creatures, which are a rip off of the Alien Facehugger, have taken over four scientists. The Doctor calls them Dream Crabs that eat your brain. However, the Santa Clause (Nick Frost) shows up to save Doctor and Clara but no one can explain why Santa Clause is even there.

The Doctor's face hugger from Alien

The Doctor’s face hugger from Alien

The biggest elephant in the room is the writing and how it is progressively getting worst every season. Steven Moffat took over as show runner in the fifth season. It turned out to be a special season with clever writing and deep heartfelt moments between the Doctor and companions.  Moffat seems to lost his magical and creativity because he rips off a previous Doctor Who’s plot, the face hugger from Alien, and steals plot twists from inception with the Doctor and Clara being in a multiple dreams within each other. Amy’s Choice was a episode written by Simon Nye but again executive producer approves storylines before writers write the episode.  Amy’s Choice is about Amy Pond being in a dream state being forced between the Doctor or her fiancée, Rory Williams.  All three cast members are in a dream state and this is episode was no different.  Clara is forced to choose between a dream state where her dead boyfriend is with her or the Doctor. She chooses the Doctor.  It feels like all of the animosity between Clara and The Doctor dissipates at the end of the episode. The writing of his episode was horrendous and had no interesting storyline what so ever. Moffat, I’m begging you as a fan,  the current direction of Doctor Who is going to kill Doctor Who again. It will be the Colin Baker years all over again. The next negative about the episode is Nick Frost.

Nick Frost was a great Santa Clause in this episode; however, he is severely underutilized and misused. Santa Clause (spoiler alert) is the Doctor’s, Clara’s, and the other four member’s subconscious. Frost’s introduction in the episode was pretty hilarious and his banter with the Doctor was great. However, Santa is turned into a joke. Nick Frost is one of the most hilarious and recognizable British comedians in the world, and Moffat gave him little screen time. Frost’s punch line’s did work like saying “Santa’s bag was bigger on the inside” like the TARDIS thus the reason why Santa can carry so many presents. Honestly, this episode should have had Nick Frost/Peter Capaldi team up, and not Frost leading the Doctor and Clara into a dark nightmare dream on Christmas Day.  The Doctor’s and Clara’s relationship is a huge negative.

The Doctor has had some troublesome companions that give him headaches but Clara is a witch. It feels like the Doctor and Clara are that married couple who at one moment are at each other’s throats then they get all nice to each other. Clara brings out the worst in the Doctor, and The Doctor brings the worst in Clara. The relationship it’s self is so bipolar. The relationship turns the Doctor into an asshole. The Doctor is mean and malicious to other people. For example, he is particularity mean to Clara’s boyfriend, Danny Pink. The Doctor knows that Danny Pink is dead but he still calls him “PE” in Clara’s dream. Danny was a math teacher but The Doctor calls him “PE” to demean Danny. The Doctor is egotistical but has never displayed such demeaning qualities towards other individuals like Capaldi’s Doctor has. He calls people idiots and makes fun of them for being stupid. He seriously lacks empathy and his companion doesn’t give him any empathy because of the constant arguing or the damsel in distress situation that Clara finds herself in. However, a positive is the Scottish accent is great and it makes me like the Doctor but really despise where the direction of the character is heading along with his companion.

Overall, “Last Christmas” is a pathetic episode which lacks a lot of creativity and entertainment. The episode misuses the characters and force feeds the audience a mean spiteful Doctor who calls people morons. The direction of Doctor Who is starting to go down hill and it is not Capaldi’s fault. The man has been a big Doctor Who fan since he was a kid but the writing makes him so unlikeable.  His evil mean streak was funny in the first part of season 8 but now he is becoming more like the Master.  “Last Christmas” gets a 1 out of 5 from me.

I’m not trying to bash the show but very critical of the problems that is turning long time fans like myself away from getting excited and wanting to watch the show.

Arrow (the climb) review

Arrow vs. Ra Al Ghul; what could go wrong?

Arrow vs. Ra’s Al Ghul; what could go wrong?

Ra’s Al Ghul is one of the most vicious DC comic book villains. Liam Neeson played Ra’s Al Ghul in Batman Begins, and David Warner did the voice for the character in the Batman Animated series.  Ra’s Al Ghul has two daughters, Nyssa and Talia. He is pretty ruthless in exacting vengeance for his daughters if they get hurt. This is why Arrow, Oliver Queen, is in his cross hairs.  Oliver finally comes face to face with the Head of the Demon tonight.

Oliver finds out his DNA matches the DNA on the arrow that killed Sara Lance. Diggle quickly speculates that Malcolm Merlyn, John Barrowman, has something to do with Sara dying. The team investigate and find out that Thea Queen came back to Starling the night before Sara died. The League of Assassins gives Oliver 48 hours to find Sara’s killer or they will kill fifty innocent people. Malcolm shows up and tells Oliver that Thea killed Sara Lance. She was under the influence of a drug that he gave her and that Ra’s Al Ghul would kill Thea if Oliver turns Malcolm over to the League. Oliver realizes that he must face Ra’s in combat but it could cost his life. (Oh positive note, Ray Palmer showed Felicity his Atom suit or the design of it.)

Oliver meets his fate

Oliver meets his fate

First, this mid-season finale was not as good as the Flash’s but it still a good episode.  The revelation that Malcolm has been playing innocent the whole time about Sara dying, but he is really a sadistic SOB that formed a plan to get out of facing Ra’s Al Ghul. Hell, he uses his daughter as leverage to make Oliver fight Ra’s because he knows Oliver has no chance in hell. Oliver is no where near as skilled in combat as Ra’s. Oliver’s martial arts skills don’t even touch the surface where Batman is compared when Batman takes on Ra’s. I want to warn fans not to compare the two heroes. Batman has been fighting for crime and learning master his stealthy technique and his knowledge of unarmed combat for he was a teenage. Oliver has been doing this for 5 to 8 years and still couldn’t beat Deathstroke without some help from Felicity. The comparison is unfair so Arrow fans don’t bring up on how Batman can kick Ra’s ass and Oliver Queen can’t. Deathstroke couldn’t even take down Ra’s Al Ghul. Ra’s is the world’s most formidable killer.

Matt Nable as Ra's Al Ghul

Matt Nable as Ra’s Al Ghul

Matt Nable was a good Ra’s Al Ghul. Yes, Liam Neeson might have been a better Ra’s Al Ghul but he had more screentime. Neeson was more a cold unattached assassin while Nable’s Ra’s has some love for his daughter. Nable nailed the character in his limited screentime. He was more deceptive as Ra’s because honestly, had a feeling that Oliver would win during the fight tonight and kill him.  Nable does look like he is 50 to 60, and he kicked Oliver’s ass.  Kudos, to  Matt Nable for being a menacing Ra’s Al Ghul.

Overall, this episode of Arrow was good. It wasn’t like the Flash’s mid-season finale but it was entertaining. Honestly, this episode was design humble and evolve Oliver Queen as a crime fighter. He has pretty much been the top dog for a year or two. He pretty much defeated the Flash but he showed weakness in his skill level to defeat one or more assassins. “The Climb” gets a 4/5.

The Flash (The Man in the Yellow Suit) review

hello reverse flash

hello reverse flash

Dr. Wells really?!

Tonight, The Flash introduced the man in the yellow suit. The man in the yellow suit is called the Reserve Flash or Professor Zoom.  The Reverse Flash is the Flash’s arch nemesis and killed Barry’s mother, Nora Allen. Tonight, on the Flash, we learned that Reverse Flash is Dr. Wells. “Or is he?”

It is Christmas time, and Barry Allen is upset about Iris and Eddie. The Man in the Yellow Suit comes back to town for a tachyon device. Tachyons on a theoretical molecule that can travel through space and time in science fiction. Barry tries to beat the Reserve Flash but gets epically beaten to a pulp. Dr. Wells and Detective West devise a trap to capture the Man in the Yellow Suit. Can Barry stop the Reverse Flash or will he fail and get killed?

A force field cant hold him

A force field cant hold him

Before talking about the revelation of Dr. Wells being the Reverse Flash, the writers should get brownie points on having Barry Allen grow some balls and telling Iris about his feelings for her. That’s a positive mention along with the special effects because they were awesome. I believe that Dr. Wells isn’t the Reverse Flash. He knows who he is and where he is. I think it is Eddie Thawne from the future. The Flash can time travel and it is one of the biggest predicaments about writing continuity and mystery for this show. The Flash cannot break the time barrier yet but he will. The Reverse Flash has a vicious nature with his taunts of Barry Allen which made me get cheerful inside.  Honestly, I can’t wait to see how they use the Reverse Flash in future episodes of the show.

Robbie Amell, Stephen Amell’s brother, was introduced as Ronnie Raymond a few weeks ago. He appeared again with showing his fire capabilities last week. He comes to save the day. He burns the Reverse Flash which causes the villain to flee. His appearance is scruffy looking and it is visually appeasing to see him turn into the Human Torch AKA Firestorm in the DC comics. I really hope they use the character more because he is super cool.

Overall, the Flash episode “Man in the Yellow Suit” was great. It is a fun episode and my mom despises Eddie now. I don’t like him either as a person but as a character he is a big dick. I give the episode a 4.5/5.
