The Turtles Are Back!

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back. The movie is directed by Jonathan Liebesmann, and the Turtles were created by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman. The movie is quite entertaining; however, it is still getting negative critical reaction. There are reasons for some criticisms in this movie but audience members seemed to enjoy it. They  had some skepticism about a Michael Bay produced Ninja Turtles movie. Bay hasn’t made or produced many good movies in the last few years; however, he got it right with the Turtles.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie begins with the Foot Clan ravaging certain industries of the New York City. They attack robotic and chemical labs. April O’ Neil, Megan Fox, is struggling reporter who wants to make a name for herself. She keeps investigating the Foot Clan and their activities with the resistance of her camera man Vernon, Will Arnett. She sees a Foot Clan raid and meets the Turtles. She and the Turtles try to stop Eric Sacks and Shedder.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is visually spectacular, fun, and entertaining. The biggest positive of the movie are the Turtles. Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo have their personalities intact. Donatello is such a nerd, and his glasses give him the ability to be a lot like Batman. Mikey loves watching YouTube videos, Leo mediates all of the time, and Raph trains a lot. They all have their personalities which causes trust and conflict issues between them. Megan Fox is another positive.

Fox plays a better reporter than Amy Adams as Lois Lane in Man of Steel. Fox actually gets into the heat of battle and doesn’t have to be constantly saved by the four heroes. She gives a lot of depth to April O’ Neil and has a good interaction with the four heroes in a half shell. Honestly, her human story wasn’t a problem and tied in with the Turtles logically. There are quite of few negatives about the movie.

For one, Splinter looks horrible. He is a bald rat that wears a foo man chu. He is cool when he fights but his appearance made my stomach turn. Secondly, Will Arnett makes so many sex jokes about him and April. He comes off as needy and creepy. Finally, the story itself is a rip off of the Amazing Spider-man, and Sony should sue them for copyright or something. They story itself is entertaining. Of course, any Michael Bay film has some crude and sexual jokes that are not needed.

Overall the new Ninja Turtles film is quite fun. The Turtles are entertaining, and Fox plays a good April O’ Neil. There are some Michael Bay parts of the movie such as crude humor and sexual jokes about women. He did produce the damn thing. This movie is nowhere as bad as Transformers or The Amazing Spider-man 2. Unlike Godzilla it is not a disappointment. Turtles gets 3.25 out of 5.
