The X-Men Film Franchise is the best Marvel film franchise again

X-Men: Days of Future Past is the seventh installment in the X-Men film franchise. All seven films has had Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) as the main protagonist.  X-Men and X-Men 2 are considered to be classic films for superhero genre. X-Men 3 killed off: Xavier, Cyclops, Jean Grey, and had Magneto and Rogue lose their powers. X-Men: Wolverine was a disaster and dislike by most fans for ruining fan favorites, Deadpool and Gambit. The two characters served as window dressing and had no purpose being in the movie. X-Men: First Class was a reboot of the franchise. It focused on the relationship between Charles Xavier (Professor X) and Erik Lehnsherr (Magneto). It was my favorite of the X-Men movies. The Wolverine was a sequel to Wolverine Origins and X-Men 3. Wolverine finds himself in Japan and his healing power is taken from him. He finds a companion that travels with him back to America where he is conflicted by Magneto and Professor X asking for his help. X-Men Days of Future Past picks up the story ten years later in 2023.

X-Men Days of Future Past is set in 2023 and 1973.  Mutants are on the blink of extinction from the Sentinels. These robot have hunted and killed nearly all of the mutants. A few mutants contact Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and his surviving X-Men. Kitty Pride (Ellen Page), a former student, has the ability to send people back in time only a few days to a week. Magneto (Ian McKellan) and Professor X devise a plan to prevent this war from happening. Wolverine’s (Hugh Jackman) ability to rapidly heal himself allows Kitty to send him back 50 years into the past. His mission to prevent the Sentinels from being created.  In 1973, the younger Xavier (James McAvoy) is a recluse in his mansion and takes a serum that inhibits in his mutant powers.  The younger Magneto (Michael Fassbender) is imprisoned at the Pentagon. Wolverine needs to reunite the two friends long enough to prevent a mutant from assassinating Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage). He creates the Sentinel. Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) is the mutant that assassinates Trask, and the government creates the Sentinel project to wipe out the mutants.

This superhero movie is nearly perfect in every way. A few negatives are a few CGI problems, camera shots, and there is a 5 min to 10 min gap where the film slows down. Despite a few minor flaws; X-Men: Days of Future Past proves people wrong. The film has about 18 to 20 mutants that play a specific part and share screen time helping each other.  Simon Kinberg wrote these parts beautifully, and Bryan Singer shot this sequences so perfectly that I loved them all. I  am referring to the future fight sequences against the Sentinels.  The X-Men in the future are: Bishop, Sunspot, Blink, Warpath, Storm, Ice Man, Colossus and Magneto.  They have a few major battles with the future Sentinels. Kitty Pride, Professor X, and Wolverine are preoccupied with fixing the past and preventing the future. The fight sequences in the past are beautifully written and shot also especially Quicksilver’s.  I’ll talk about him later. The best part of the movie (to me) is Wolverine is no longer the main hero.

Wolverine isn’t the hero that saves the day in the movie. He plays a significant part by being sent back in time and helps the younger Xavier discover himself as leader and mutant. Wolverine tells Charles to find the X-Men and unite them. Wolverine specifically mentions Storm, Scott Summers, and Jean Grey as names to keep a look out for. X-Men: Days of Future Past is a Professor X, Magneto, and Mystique centric film.

James McAvoy becomes Professor X in this film. He is no longer Charles Xavier. He is now Charles Xavier leader of the X-Men and spokesman for mutant rights. Fassbender is perfect as Magneto. I love him from then Ian McKellan. McKellan is a suave Magneto. Fassbender is a ruthless son of a bitch who will kill anybody that gets in his way. He portrays Magneto to the T. Magneto is a parable for Hilter and Fassbender nails that parable.   Lawrence is now Mystique. I can’t wait to see her internal conflicts down the road. She could get own solo films because she is that dynamic as Mystique.  James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Jennifer Lawrence are the faces of the X-Men film franchise. I felt the underlying purpose of the film is to see Hugh Jackman pass the torchto McAvoy, Fassbender, and Lawrence to be the faces of the X-Men film franchise. They are going to lead this film franchise for the next 10 to 15 years.  Gambit will be coming in the next X-Men movie (hooray) and hardcore film fans will see him as face of the franchise also!  Quicksilver played by Evan Peters steals the film.

The internet made fun of Quicksilver when they saw the first photo of him. I thought he was going to disco dance or something with that outfit on. Most hardcore X-Men fans thought he would be a joke of a character. We were apparently assholes. He might be the best character in the movie. He has 3 scenes in the movie. He steals every scene that he is in and out does Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, and James McAvoy by having a more dynamic onscreen presence. Singer and Kinberg will be hugged by fans at Somic Coc, because Quicksilver will become super popular. He’s sarcastic, arrogant, a pain in the ass, and Peter’s on screen presence commands your attention. Kids might even dress up as Quicksilver for Halloween. The scenes using his super speed were shot so perfectly. The audience feels like they are living Quicksilver’s life. He will be coming back for the sequel, and I hope he stays in the X-Men universe for a long time. I really wanted more Quicksilver in the film.

I could talk X-Men: Days of Future Past more but that would include spoilers. Overall this is a brilliant summer blockbuster film and the best X-Men film. It is two hours of pure enjoyment, and the cast is incredible. The special effects were perfect except one scene with Fassbender on a train. The dialogue is witty and hilarious. We really do see Hugh Jackman pass the torch onto new actors who will usher in new adventures in the X-Men film franchise. I will go see this movie probably several more times. If you are a X-Men fan please stay for the post credit scene. I give this film a 5/5.

X-Men: Days of Future Past. What did you think? Comment below and let me know. Gambit, Apocalypse, Apocalypse’s four horsemen, and more X-Men will be established soon. I’m so excited.  The sequel comes out in May 27th, 2016.
