Locke movie review

Locke Movie review

The pictures below are the many faces of Tom Hardy throughout the 82 minute film.

 Locke 3LockeLocke 2

Locke was written and directed by Steven Knight, a British Director. Ivan Locke, played by Tom Hardy, decides that he needs to leave on his most important as construction manager to go correct a mistake. He makes a drive from Brimingham to London to be there for the birth of his child.  We learn that Ivan has been married for 13 to 15 years and has two kids as we take this journey with him. He periodically talks to his father, who is deceased, through imaginary conversations.  Locke is only 82 minutes and the plot resolves itself.

The film’s beauty is the setting takes in one location which is a Ivan Locke’s BMW. Tom Hardy drives a BMW uses his hands free mobile phone to communicate with the other characters. Tom Hardy showed his full range as an actor in this film.  He displays anger to confidence in 82 minutes. His character made me feel connected to his performance. I kept guessing how the movie would end in my mind. His character is a blue collar family man whose life goes to hell after he made one mistake, and I felt like I was there living through it too. The other actors did also a great job with their emotions and tone. They would yell at Ivn, and he would be cool as a cucumber.  Tom Hardy could be nominated for an Oscar if this film gets a wider release. Tom Hardy will win an Oscar one day but a nomination will get him more of a popular which he deserves.

I loved the film; it was remarkable beautifully written. I enjoyed Tom Hardy’s performance. The film connected with me on a personal level because I also drive and talk to myself. Driving a car is the idea place to collect your thoughts. It allows you have time to think to yourself and plan out your day. One of the reasons why this movie is great because it made driving a car a personal emotional experience that you take together with one man. I will give Locke a 5/5 because it’s damn near perfect.

Captain America 2: The Winter Solider Review

Captain America 2: the Winter Solider by Marvel Director by Joe and Anthony Russo Starting Chris Evans

Captain America 2: the Winter Solider by Marvel
Director by Joe and Anthony Russo
Starting Chris Evans

My mom and I walked out of the theater last night after seeing Captain America 2: The Winter Solider,  and I asked her was ” Is this movie better than the Avengers.” She answered “Yes” with no hesitation.  My mother is a huge superhero fan like I am. I often tell people that I’m my mother’s child. My mom has passed down a lot of amazing qualities and interests to me. One of those interests are being a fan of comic books. Batman will be always my number 1 with Spider-man a close second. The more I think about her comment “this movie is better than the Avengers.” I totally agree that Captain America 2 super succeeded every expectation I had going to into it and for that reason makes this movie better than the Avengers.

The Avengers is a hard movie to beat. Joss Whedon, the director, created a movie that has fun witty dialogue, a excellent narrative, great character development, amazing villain, and great action sequences. Joss Whedon pulls an ace out of his hat making the Avengers; however, Joe and Anthony Russo, directors of Winter Solider, pull two aces out of their hats. The movie has better fight sequences,  a better compelling narrative, the character development is spectacular, and the villains are amazing. The Winter Solider develops as an character, and he is the main villain. Here’s a quick synopsis of the movie.

After the Avengers, Steve Rodgers (Chris Evans) finds himself working with Shield. He is teamed up with Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and a swat commander, Brock Rumlow (Frank Grillo) on most missions.  He finds himself at odds because the 21st century extremely different than the 1940’s.  He often talks to a veteran’s counselor named Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie).  Captain America’s first mission of the movie is to rescue hostages held by pirates, and Black Widow is sent for a different reason to retrieve information.   Rodgers has a confrontation with Nick Fury , director of Shield and played by Samuel L. Jackson, about eliminating threats before they happen. Come to find out, Nick Fury has a confrontation with the Winter Solider and pays for it dearly. Cap and Widow go digging deep into Shield’s history and find out there’s a plot deadlier than Shield knows about. The agency to hunt down Cap and Widow because is comprised by another force.

The Winter Solider has beautiful story telling. It’s not a big thinking movie but it’s a lot like a Jason Bourne movie with Marvel characters.  The story is so beautifully crafted but there are so many easter eggs that give hints to what will come in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  The Russo brothers also gave a lot of time to character development and interaction.  Captain America and Black Widow would be on a mission, fighting bad guys but carry on a conversation about his dating life during the fight scenes. Sam Wilson, played by Anthony Mackie, has so much witty dialogue with Steve Rodgers and the duo have a lot of screen time. Sidekicks are not popular but the Wilson character allows movie producers to have a template on how to make these characters work. I felt connected to every character in the story. I saw their motivations and impressions of what the world should be.  Nick Fury believes that the world is full of threats, and Shield should neutralize them before they can happen. Alexander Pierce his boss, Robert Redford, believes people need a strong hand to feel safe and can’t make decisions on their own.  Captain America of course still stands for freedom, individuality, and personal responsibility. He believes in a system laws and rules which conflicts with Nick Fury’s  and Alexander Pierce’s ideals.  The Winter Solider, Sebastian Stan, has character development but i don’t want to spoil it.

The Winter Solider excelled in attributes that make action and spy thrillers such wonderful movies. The special effects were killer but sometimes i noticed little flaws in the CGI. I had to really think about them after I saw them. The best part of the movie was the fight choreography. The fight choreography had everything that I have wanted in a superhero movie. It was flawless and it felt like you were watching a lightsaber fight from Star Wars but with martial arts. The choreography is everything you want in a Batman movie but never get.  Captain America is no martial artist but when you have an unbreakable shield then it doesn’t matter. The visuals and sounds of the shield banging off multiple people and walls were excellent. The shield also makes a sound when Cap attaches it to his back.

Overall, Captain America 2: The Winter Solider gets a 5/5. I will post a spoiler blog about the movie  sometime in the next few weeks so people have a chance to see this film. You don’t need to watch the first Captain America to understand this movie. The first post credits scene teases the Avengers 2: Age of Ultron. There are several mentions of characters that will be in upcoming Marvel films so listen for those.

Arrow Episode Deathstroke (Spoilers)

Deathstroke played by: Manu Bennett

played by:
Manu Bennett

What an a spectacular episode!  “Deathstroke”, the newest episode of Arrow,  exemplified everything of what makes Arrow a great television show. The writers of this episode made an hour of television feel like it was a season finale. Television show’s rarely have several episodes that feel like a season finale. My mom and I sat on the edge of our seats wanting the commercial breaks over.  It’s time for a quick synopsis of this episode.

The episode begins with Slade Wilson capturing Thea Queen.  Moria Queen and Sebastian Blood are having a mayoral debate, but it is interrupted by a video message demanding ransom for Thea’s release.  The Arrow Team figures out Slade’s location and confront him. Roy punches Slade which had no effect on him. Arrow shoots Slade with a sedative, and calls Detective Lance to arrest him.  Oliver has a conversation with Slade in the interrogation room. Slade reveals that he’s attempting to destroyed him for his actions on the island. Slade publicly has an alibi which allows him to be set free. Slade confronts Thea and sets her free. However, he tells her a family secret.  Oliver finds out that Isabel Rochev used her powers to make the board of directors vote her, CEO. She and Slade are partners, and she is also after the Queen name.  Oliver and Isabel fight, and Oliver makes her tell where Slade is. Slade is gone and Oliver learns Thea is safe. Slade hijacks a prison bus to build an army of super soldiers. Oliver and Moria to go Thea and hug her. She drops the bomb on them because she knows that Malcolm Merilyn is her father. She walks away from her family.  Roy also decides to quit Team Arrow, and he and Thea leave Starling City. Slade drops two more bombs on the audience. First, he, Brother Blood, and Isabel are using the applied sciences division to make the super solider serum and are going to build an army to take over the city. The big big bomb is that Slade shows up at Laurel’s apartment.  He tells her that Oliver Queen is the Arrow and it leaves a flood of emotions in her mind. The episode fades to black after that.

“Deathstroke” had so many positives and no positives.  I have 5 positives about this episode.  First, Slade is always 3 steps ahead of Oliver. He got Isabel to sabotage Oliver’s control of Queen’s industries. He told Laurel Oliver’s secret expecting that she probably will her boss and go public with it. I feel this will cause a public witch for Oliver Queen. He also knew that Thea’s secret will destroy her relationship with Oliver.  I loved Shado being with Slade of being a voice of Slade’s dark side. The writers gave a nod to the television show Dexter. Dexter’s father is the voice of Dexter’s darkside in Dexter.  My second positive is  Roy actually became a bad ass and quit Team Arrow.  He and Thea leave Starling City for the time being. My third positive was the Detective Lance getting arrested.  His arrest by his bosses show that the city’s politicians are unwilling to believe that the Arrow is a force of good against the city’s crime. My fourth positive is Isabel. I love Summer Glau as her character. Her conflict with Oliver finally revealed her character’s motives. She also has a history with Oliver’s father. My final positive is Oliver’s fall. He hit rock bottom this episode and now he is going to recover. I feel by the season’s end that Oliver will be a stronger character.

My opinion on this episode overall is 5/5.  Slade Wilson takes control of the situation and disrupts Oliver’s life.  Laural knows Oliver’s secret. Oliver is dissed by his sister and his own team member. I will discuss in a post this week that could potentially happen in the last 5 episodes of this season.  Arrow is a great show and people to need to watch it.

My top 10 anticipated films for this summer (2014)

Captain American the Winter Solider opens this week and this release I wanted to do a list of my top anticipated films of the summer.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by Paramount Turtles left from right: Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo , Donatello

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by Paramount August 8th, 2014
Turtles left from right:
Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo , Donatello

10.  Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The Teenage Mutant Ninja is one of the most unknown films coming out this summer. We don’t have a lot of information on or footage from the movie. From synopsis; we know Shedder and his foot clan have a grip on New York City political structure. The turtles need to find out their destiny and help April O’ Neil take down Shedder and his foot clan.  Michael Bay is the producer and Jonathan Liebesman is the director (The ring, The ring 2, Clash of the Titans). From the trailer, it looks like the movie will be visually dark for setting and  tone.  The turtles look amazing visually. The reason why this is movie is not higher on my list because there’s one trailer which does show the interaction between the brothers that fans love. Turtle fan’s love the conflict between Leonard and Raphael, the quirkiness of Michelangelo, and the inventiveness of Donatello. This movie has potential to gross  a lot of money world wide.

X-men: Days of Future's Past by Fox May 26th, 2014

X-men: Days of Future Past by Fox

9.   X-men days of Future Past

X-men Days of Future past is set in the future where mutants are hunted and killed. Xavier and Magneto send Wolverine back in time to prevent Magneto assassinating a senator which starts a mutant witch hunt by the Sentinels and their creator, Bolivar Trask.  The plot of this movie is unknown. I personality haven’t learned that much from the trailers. No one has seen footage of this movie and the excitement from the general audience is a shoulder shrug. They also made Wolverine the main mutant again and there is so many better mutants that they could have chosen. I think franchise fans want to see someone else be the focus other than Wolverine.  The film’s predecessor, X-Men First Class, was such a great movie for this reason. It focused on Magneto and Xavier and their relationship from friendship to rivals. People wanted a sequel to that movie not this mutant mixing pot of characters.  However, with Wolverine being involved I don’t know how this will play out.  I want more a more of narrative trailer because the two that are out doesn’t get me excited. I also want them to correct the mistake of Gambit and making Cyclops a pussy from the previous films. X-men days of future past has a sequel coming out called X-Men Apocalypse  on May 13th, 2016.

8.  Million Ways to Die in the West

A Million Ways to Die in the West by Seth McFarland. This comedy set in the old west tells the story of a common man and his friends who see people die randomly. The trailer is hilarious. McFarland also brought in great character actors to play roles such as Neil Patrick Harris as the womanizer and Liam Neeson as the gunslinger. I’m really looking for forward for this movie because early reaction has been extremely positive.

Frank by Studio 4 Release Date: TBA in the US

Frank by Studio 4
Release Date: TBA in the US

7.  Frank

Frank starts Michael Fassbender who plays Frank. Frank is a quirky comedy and the cast is amazing. The trailer is hilarious. The movie received so much positive reviews at Southwest and Sundance film festival that it will increase the potential box office revenue. Critics seemed to love this film.

Begin Again by the Weinstein July 4, 2014

Begin Again by the Weinstein

6.   Begin Again

Begin Again is a potential Oscar nominated film. The premise of the movie is a studio executive getting fired and being at the end of his rope. He finds a musician playing at bar and sees a potential star in the making. They set out to make a record at locations with little to no money. The cast is very talent such has Cee Lo Green and  Adam Levine. It’s release date is good because it will attract a lot of the audiences who don’t want to see the superhero movies or action movies.

Transformers: Age of Extinction Paramount Pictures June 27, 2014

Transformers: Age of Extinction Paramount Pictures

5.  Transformers: Age of the Extinction

Transformers: Age of the Extinction is the fourth transformers movie directed by Michael Bay. The storyline is a father finds a dominant Optimus Prime who is being haunted by the United States Government along with his fellow transformers. The government also builds their own transformers including Glavatron which is built from Megatron’s body.  Optimus Prime has no choice but to call on the Dinobots to repeal the Decepticon invasion. The reason why I’m hyped about this movie is the cast. Paramount showed footage from this movie at Cinecon. Critics loved it. It reminded them of the first Transformers movie. The human story seems to work well and it looks funny.  The cast is completely talent and Mark Whalberg is the perfect actor to carry the franchise forward. At the end of the trailer; Optimus bitch slaps the giant robotic T-Rex, Grimlock,  and takes charge. I was sold on this movie from that scene.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Caesar releases his army on July 11th, 2016

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes by Fox
Caesar releases his army on July 11th, 2014

4.  Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is a sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes. It’s set ten years after the first movie. Man has been wiped out by a deadly virus and a group of survivors are lead by Gary Oldman. Caesar and his apes live in the forest and the group of human thought they had wiped them out. Fox is so excited about this film that they’re already have brought back the writer and director for the sequel. They also have set a release date for this sequel for July 29th, 2016.  The movie only has one trailer but footage screen has gained positive reception.  The next film on my list has similarities to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 May 2nd, 2014 Spidey takes on Rhino, Green Goblin, and Electro

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 by Sony
May 2nd, 2014
Spidey takes on Rhino, Green Goblin, and Electro

3.  The Amazing Spider-man 2

Sony only has one big blockbuster franchise, and they got to make it count. A few critics have seen this film and compared it to the Dark Knight.  The trailers and featurettes  that have been released have added to my excitement for this film. The acting performances, the dialogue, and special effects from the first film were so amazing. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone have such great chemistry on screen. Jamie Fox is playing a villain which he usually plays good guys. The storyline looks like it will reveal more about Peter’s past.  Electro has a very bad ass look to him. The score will be amazing since Hans Zimmer will do it justice. The special effects and visuals took amazing. This sequel is the second part of a larger universe of Spider-man cinematic universe.  We can expect a Sinister 6 movie, a Venom movie, along with the Amazing Spider-man 3 and 4.  This film is expected to give hints what will come in the Spider-man movie franchise.  The only reason why this film is not one number for me because I can’t wait for the two ahead of it more.

Guardians of the Galaxy by Marvel August 1st, 2014

Guardians of the Galaxy by Marvel
August 1st, 2014 Left to Right: Star Lord, Drax, Gamora, Groot, Rocket Raccoon

2.  Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy is the final film of Marvel Phase 2 before the Avengers: Age of Ultron which is released on May 1st, 2015. Guardians is about Peter Quill, Star Lord, teaming up with galactic misfits to prevent a deadly force from destroying the universe. The cast is incredible but a lot of the characters have been yet to reveal. My anticipation comes from the trailer. The trailer was completely different from any marvel trailer. It had a lighter tone with a lot of humor. It felt so human too even with aliens being the focus of the film. It will be an action movie and it will explain Thanos. He was the guy at the end of the Avengers. This film will help explain how the Avengers and the infinity stones will play out in the phase three universe.  My next film was always to be number 1.

Godzilla by Toho, Warner Bros. May 16, 2014

Godzilla by Toho, Warner Bros.

1.  Godzilla

GODZILLA was the first word I ever read. He has been with me since I was two years old. I have been wanting for a new Godzilla movie for 10 years. The two trailers say it all. The film might be only 2 hours but it will be epic. I hoping for a 2 and 1/2 hour film because I really want to see a tangible story. Every account of people seeing Godzilla footage has been so positive. The most current footage of Godzilla was shown at Cinemacon. Adam Sandler and  Drew Barrymore took the stage once that screening was complete to present their upcoming romantic comedy, Sandler joked, “F*** Blended, how about that Godzilla!?!” Barrymore confessed that it had made her cry, declaring, “That is going to be such a hit.” Slash from Guns and Roses saw an early screening and loved the movie. It comes out in 6 weeks and I’ll safety bet the movie will be sold out at almost every showing for opening weekend. Godzilla is my most anticipated movie because it will be probably the best summer blockbuster that strikes a cord with the world and fans will demand more movies. I feel that Godzilla will be a film that everybody loves and leaves the theater satisfy twice or more after they come back to see it that many times.

Honorable Mentions:
The neighbors, Maleficent, Million Dollar Arm, edge of tomorrow, 22 jump street, Get on up, the expendables 3, Hercules
